India's legislature has passed a new law aimed at reforming institutions that manage extensive land properties owned by the Muslim community.

Recently, an image showing Myanmar’s former pro-democracy leader and Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi in prison has been circulated on social media with the caption: “The final fate of a Nobel laureate. Suu Kyi. You must be ready Dr. Yunus. #StepDownYunus #YunusMustGo.”

Fact-check

The Rumor Scanner team has found through investigation that the image being circulated is not authentic. Instead, it is an edited version of an older photograph of a different incarcerated woman, digitally manipulated to insert Aung San Suu Kyi’s face.

Further inquiry revealed that the original image has been used symbolically in several reports published on Police1 in 2017, Correctional News in 2018, and Public News Service in 2021. These reports referenced the image source as Wikimedia Commons.

On the Wikimedia Commons website, the original image is dated July 12, 2013. The description provided with the image reads: “A female prisoner living inside her tiny prison cell. The cell provides the inmate with a toilet and a bed, as well as bars to protect her from the outside elements. The cell is designed for the comfort and benefit of the prisoner as well as the public.”

Upon examining the original image, it is evident that the woman’s face was digitally replaced with that of Aung San Suu Kyi to create the image currently being shared.

It is notable that similar images falsely attributed to Aung San Suu Kyi have circulated before. At that time, Rumor Scanner had published a fact-check and a quick fact report addressing the misinformation.
