Recently, after the Wakf (Amendment) Bill was passed in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, gave her assent to the bill. In this context, a video titled “This is the aftermath of the passage of the Wakf Bill in India... the administration has started eviction drives against mosques and madrasas” has been circulating on social media.
Fact-check
Rumor Scanner’s investigation reveals that the video is not from the recent period but has been available on the internet prior to the introduction or passage of the Wakf Bill. Therefore, there is no connection between the discussed video and the Wakf Bill.
At the beginning of the investigation, a reverse image search from the video led to a reels video posted on 24 March this year by a Facebook account named ‘Salman Ali’, under the title, “मदरसा बोर्ड मे अगर नहीं हुआ होगा रजिस्ट्रेशन तो मदरसा होगा सील, भगवानपुर तहसील प्रशासन द्वारा संचालित मदरसों की छानबीन.” Translating the caption yields: “If the madrasa is not registered with the Madrasa Board, it will be sealed, Bhagwanpur Tehsil administration madrasa investigation.” The video published with this caption matches exactly with the video circulated in the discussed claim.
Based on information obtained from this post, a keyword search revealed a video report published on 24 March on the YouTube channel of Indian media outlet ‘News State’, under the title “Uttarakhand Illegal Madrasa: Haridwar में अवैध मदरसों पर स्ट्राइक, कर दिए कई सील | CM Dhami”.
According to this Hindi-language report, the administration of Uttarakhand in India has taken a strict stance on madrasas. Several madrasas in the Haridwar, Bhagwanpur, and Laksar areas have already been sealed.
Additionally, another report published on the YouTube channel ‘DD NEWS UTTARAKHAND’ shows the same officers performing their duties, which closely resembles the discussed video. Therefore, the circulated video associated with the claim is old.
Currently, there are widespread protests and objections across various parts of India regarding the newly passed Wakf law. Multiple petitions demanding the repeal of the law have also been filed in the country’s Supreme Court. Although initiatives have been taken to identify and confiscate disputed Wakf properties in different regions of the country, the discussed video has existed on the internet from a time preceding the passage of the Wakf (Amendment) Bill.
Previously, Rumor Scanner published a fact-check report when a video claiming that "Asaduddin Owaisi cried in the Lok Sabha after the passage of the Wakf (Amendment) Bill" was circulated.
Therefore, a previously recorded video of a different incident is being promoted on social media as footage of mosque and madrasa evictions in India following the recent passage of the Wakf (Amendment) Bill, which is misleading.
