Viral photos claiming to show members of the Bangladesh Army placing the picture of Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus under their rifles and boots are edited. FactWatch’s investigation found that the images were manipulated. Original photos of army personnel were collected from the internet, and Dr. Yunus’s photo was inserted later.

In the first image, a soldier is seen standing with a rifle in hand, and next to his boots appears a picture of Dr. Muhammad Yunus. A reverse image search traced this photo to a Facebook account named “Soldier Sabbir (Archive),” where it was posted on August 14. The caption included two emojis and the words “Toy Gun.” The Chief Adviser’s image was not present in the original post. Reverse searches revealed multiple digital traces of the same image, none containing Dr. Yunus’s photo.

Verification through several image analysis tools confirmed that Dr. Yunus’s image was inserted separately near the rifle and boots. For example, the error level analysis in the forensic feature of the fake news debunking tool InVID WeVerify marked the section containing Dr. Yunus as suspicious. Another tool, Image Verification Assistance, also indicated a 100 and 99 percent likelihood of the image being edited based on multiple algorithmic checks.

The same image has also been circulated as a video on Facebook. Verification with the deepfake detection tool DeepFake-o-Meter showed that several models identified the content as over 90 percent AI-generated.

In the second image, a soldier’s boot is shown near Dr. Muhammad Yunus’s picture, with a rifle pointed at it. This image was also found on the same “Soldier Sabbir (Archive)” Facebook account, posted on September 25. The original post did not include the Chief Adviser’s image.

Error level analysis using the InVID WeVerify forensic tool again flagged the section containing Dr. Yunus’s picture as suspicious.

Based on these findings, FactWatch concludes that the photos circulating on Facebook claiming members of the Bangladesh Army placed Dr. Muhammad Yunus’s picture under their rifles and boots are digitally altered.
