Multiple Facebook accounts and pages have circulated three photo cards bearing the logo of the national daily Kalbela, claiming that Asif Mahmud, advisor to the interim government, Hasnat Abdullah, chief coordinator of the southern region of the National Citizens' Party, and Sarjis Alam, chief coordinator of the northern region of the same party, have recently issued warnings against student protests following the alleged crash of a fighter jet at Milestone College.
On July 22, a Facebook account named "Mohammad Sourav Hossain" posted the photo cards, stating, “Dear students, please listen carefully. Though I didn’t want to speak, you have been used by them, and today, they have become owners of billions. What have you gained? ~The government will crack down if students don’t return home—Asif Mahmud. ~Sarjis urged students to return home within 24 hours. ~Hasnat has now warned Milestone students. Do you now understand? They are brainwashing you against the Sheikh Hasina government and threatening you. They have gained power using you and have turned Bangladesh into a mob-ruled state, backed by foreign forces. They are using you. Realize before it’s too late—these people have brought the country to the brink of destruction. Now is the time to resist. Remove Yunus—save the country. Remove the coordinators—save the country.”
Fact Check
BOOM Bangladesh has verified that the three photo cards in question are fake. The national daily Kalbela confirmed on its verified Facebook page that these cards were not created by the organization. A keyword-based search yielded no such reports or photo cards on Kalbela's official website or Facebook page supporting the claim. However, a post dated July 22 was found on Kalbela's verified page, clearly stating that these photo cards, featuring the images of Asif Mahmud, Hasnat Abdullah, and Sarjis Alam, were fabricated using Kalbela’s logo and are being shared on social media. The post appealed to users to report any accounts or pages sharing these fake cards by commenting with links, so that appropriate action can be taken.
In summary, counterfeit photo cards featuring the Kalbela logo and falsely attributing comments to Asif Mahmud, Hasnat Abdullah, and Sarjis Alam are being disseminated on Facebook. Kalbela has not published any such report or card. Therefore, these misleading photo cards using Kalbela's branding to spread fabricated remarks are deceptive.
