A video showing two police officers lifting an unconscious young man into a police van has gone viral on social media. It is being claimed that this footage is from Gopalganj on 16 July 2025, and that the police have extrajudicially killed the man. However, investigations reveal that the video has been online since 4 June 2025. Earlier posts suggest that the man seen in the video was identified as a mugger and was handed over to the police after being beaten by a mob near the Eid cattle market in Bhadughar Bazar, Brahmanbaria. FactWatch could not verify the identity or name of the individual, but since the incident is not from Gopalganj on 16 July, FactWatch has labeled the current viral claims on Facebook as false.

The six-second video’s caption and thumbnail claim, “Brutal killing by police in Gopalganj. Murder in broad daylight, then the body is loaded into a van.”

Investigation

The same six-second video has been seen circulating on multiple Facebook profiles since 4 June under different claims. Those posts stated that the person was identified as a mugger at the Bhadughar cattle market in Brahmanbaria and handed over to the police following a mob beating.

The content of the video that went viral yesterday on Facebook is identical to the one from 4 June. The police van, nearby CNG vehicle, three police officers, and the attire of the detained individual all match exactly. Therefore, it can be conclusively stated that the video is not recent.

Notably, on 16 July, an attack occurred at the rally site and convoy of the National Citizen Party (NCP) in Gopalganj. At least four people were reported dead in the ensuing clashes. However, the person shown in the circulated video is not among the deceased.

Accordingly, FactWatch categorizes the recent viral video and its associated claims on Facebook as false.
