Fact-Check

Investigation by the Rumor Scanner team reveals that the circulated video is not from April 21. Rather, it shows a fire that took place on September 19, 2024, at the Saha Filling Station in Bhurungamari, Kurigram.

A Facebook account named ‘Juyel Rana’ posted a video on September 20, 2024, which matches the footage currently being shared with the claim. A comparison of the two videos confirms that the footage is not from April 21 or any recent date. The caption of the video posted by Juyel Rana reads, “Bhurungamari, fire at the pump near Joymonirhat involving two oil tankers!! 19-09-2024, a fire broke out at 6:00 in the morning.”

Following this lead, a relevant keyword search found a news report published on September 19, 2024, on the website of the national daily Prothom Alo titled “Fire at filling station in Bhurungamari during petrol unloading.” According to the report, a fire occurred at a petrol station in Joymonirhat, Bhurungamari upazila, Kurigram. On Thursday, September 19, 2024, at around 5:30 a.m., a fire broke out at the Saha Filling Station, burning two lorries belonging to Meghna and Jamuna Petroleum along with 18,000 liters of petrol.

Interviews with the station authorities and local residents confirmed that two petrol-loaded lorries had arrived at the station that morning. During the process of transferring petrol from one lorry to another, a fire ignited in one of them. The flames quickly spread. Two units from the Nageshwari Fire Service responded and managed to bring the fire under control after approximately 45 minutes of effort. The photo accompanying the report also closely resembles the video being circulated in recent claims.

Therefore, the footage from the 2024 fire at Saha Filling Station in Kurigram is being misrepresented as footage of a fire on April 21. This is misleading.
