Recently, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of Bangladesh filed a case against three individuals, including Tulip Siddiq, the niece of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the former UK 'City Minister', for allegedly acquiring a flat in Eastern Housing Limited at Gulshan, Dhaka, through irregular means.
Amidst this development, a video of Tulip Siddiq has been circulating on social media where she is heard saying, “...I am not Bangladeshi...”. The caption accompanying the video claims, “...After looting all the country’s wealth, now she is denying the country. Tulip Siddiqi! ..” It has been alleged that the video is from a recent time. Based on such claims, the video has been widely shared on Facebook. Additionally, several media outlets, including Ekushey TV, Naya Diganta, and Inqilab, have reported the video as recent.
Fact-check
Rumor Scanner's investigation reveals that the remark made by Tulip Siddiq—“I“ am not Bangladeshi”—is” not recent. Rather, the statement was made in 2017 in response to a journalist's question regarding Barrister Ahmed Bin Quasem. The circulated video is being shared now with misleading claims.
Upon examining the video in question, Tulip Siddiq is seen engaging in a tense exchange and is heard saying, “Are you calling me Bangladeshi? Be careful about what you’re saying. I am a British MP. I am not Bangladeshi and I have no knowledge of the case involving the person you’re referring to.”
In the same video, another individual is heard saying, “I am saying, with one phone call, you can make a difference.” The footage also displays the logo of '4 News'.
Using this logo as a clue, the original footage was located on the YouTube channel of UK-based media outlet Channel 4 News, published on November 29, 2017, under the title “Tulip Siddiq: MP quizzed over abducted man in Bangladesh.”
The report shows that Tulip Siddiq was attending a rally advocating for the release of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who was imprisoned in Iran at the time. During this rally, she was questioned by a journalist about Bangladeshi barrister Ahmed Bin Quasem. In response, she became agitated and said, “I am not Bangladeshi, and I have no knowledge of the case involving the person you are talking about. That is all I have to say.”
At that point in the video, Siddiq is also heard making a seemingly threatening remark toward Channel 4’s pregnant producer, saying, “Thank you for coming. I hope your baby is born safely, because childbirth is tough.”
Following the incident, another UK-based media outlet, The Guardian, published a report titled “Tulip Siddiq apologises for remark to pregnant Channel 4 producer.”
According to the report, Siddiq was questioned about Ahmed Bin Quasem by Channel 4 News reporter Alex Thomson. After a heated exchange with Thomson, she made the childbirth comment directed at Channel 4 producer Daisy Ayliffe. Siddiq later issued an unconditional apology to the producer via a statement on Twitter.
Therefore, the claim that Tulip Siddiq’s “I am not Bangladeshi” remark is recent is misleading. The comment was made in 2017 in a different context and is now being circulated out of context.
