Recently, claims have circulated on social media stating that the United Nations has imposed sanctions on the military for human rights violations.
Fact-Check
An investigation by the Rumor Scanner team has found that the United Nations has not imposed any sanctions on the military for human rights violations. Instead, the claim has been propagated under the UN’s name without any credible evidence.
The investigation involved monitoring the posts promoting the claim and conducting relevant keyword searches. No reliable evidence was found to support the allegation. If the UN had indeed imposed sanctions on the Bangladesh military for human rights violations, it would have been reported by the media. However, no such reports were found in any news outlet.
Additionally, a report titled "United Nations Sanctions Letter on Bangladesh Army – An Urgent Situation" was found on January 13 on a free domain site under the name "Daily News BD Awami League" hosted on Blogspot. This report was identified as false, and Rumor Scanner had previously debunked it through a fact-checking report.
Furthermore, an article published on February 13 by the Voice of America Bangla website, titled "UN Human Rights Body Recommends Against Banning Political Parties and Supports the Disbandment of RAB," provides insights into UN recommendations. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) issued a report last year investigating killings that took place between July and August. The report called for accountability, justice, and reforms in law enforcement and security sectors. However, it did not include any recommendation for imposing sanctions on the military for human rights violations.
Therefore, the claim that the military has been sanctioned by the United Nations for human rights violations is false and fabricated.
