Yesterday (August 23), Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar arrived in Dhaka for a two-day official visit. Following his arrival, a video began circulating on social media claiming a military mutiny had erupted inside the Savar Cantonment in response to the visit.

Fact-check
An investigation by the Rumor Scanner team confirms that no such incident of mutiny has occurred recently within the Savar Cantonment. Moreover, the video being circulated does not originate from Savar. In reality, the footage is from July of the previous year and depicts law enforcement dispersing a student protest during an anti-discrimination movement near Matikata’s ECB Square in Dhaka Cantonment.

The investigation traced the original footage to the YouTube channel of the national daily Protidiner Bangladesh, which published the video on July 29 last year. The visuals in the circulated video match those in that archived footage. According to the caption on the original video, it shows student demonstrations from last year’s anti-discrimination protests.

Careful observation of Protidiner Bangladesh’s footage reveals no presence of military personnel at any point in the video. However, at one moment, a signboard appears displaying the location as “Online City Road, ECB Square, Matikata, Dhaka Cantonment.” A cross-reference using Google Maps confirms that this location lies within Dhaka Cantonment, approximately 23 kilometers from Savar Cantonment.

In addition, relevant keyword searches across news media and verified sources yielded no evidence supporting the claim of a mutiny in Savar.

Therefore, the video showing police and Ansar personnel dispersing protesters during last year’s July demonstrations has been misleadingly repurposed to claim a military mutiny in Savar following the Pakistani Foreign Minister’s visit. This claim is entirely false.
