Md. Nasir Uddin Sathi, chairman of private television channel MyTV and father of prominent content creator Tawhid Afridi, was arrested on August 17 from the Gulshan area of the capital in connection with a case filed at Jatrabari Police Station. The case involves allegations of attacks on an anti-discrimination student movement and the killing of demonstrators. Following his arrest, a video has been circulated on social media with the claim that it shows Tawhid Afridi crying after his father was taken into custody.
Fact Check
Rumor Scanner Team’s investigation reveals that Tawhid Afridi did not release any video message in which he is seen crying after the arrest of his father. In reality, the circulated clip is part of a live video streamed by Tawhid Afridi in 2022.
At the beginning of the investigation, reverse image searches of several keyframes from the video led to a verified Facebook page belonging to Tawhid Afridi. There, on February 28, 2022, a live video titled “Laika” was found. The segment of the video currently being shared matches footage that appears approximately seven minutes into this older livestream.
The video analysis shows that “Laika” was a pet dog kept at their residence. At that time, Afridi went live to discuss the dog’s illness and related concerns.
Furthermore, if Tawhid Afridi had indeed released any video reacting emotionally after his father’s recent arrest, it would likely have been reported by national media outlets. However, no such coverage has been observed.
Notably, on August 24, content creator Tawhid Afridi was himself arrested by police from Barishal.
Therefore, the video being circulated to suggest Tawhid Afridi was crying after the arrest of his father, Md. Nasir Uddin Sathi, is in fact a misleading repurposing of a 2022 video.
