A post recently circulated on Facebook claimed that international action movie star Jackie Chan had passed away. The post included a collage of three images—one allegedly showing his dead body, another purporting to show him hospitalized prior to death, and a third depicting him in a normal condition.

Fact Check

An investigation by the Rumor Scanner team confirms that Jackie Chan is alive. The death claim was fabricated by combining an artificially generated image of a corpse resembling Chan with an old photo of him in a hospital, using AI or artificial intelligence.

As Jackie Chan is a globally recognized figure, news of his death would naturally receive coverage from international media outlets. However, the investigation found no such information reported by any reputable global news source.

Further keyword searches during the investigation led to a report published on August 20 on the official Olympic website, which confirmed that Jackie Chan recently visited the Olympic House, the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), in Lausanne, Switzerland. Two videos of this visit were also found on the verified Instagram account of the Olympics, posted on August 18 and 19, respectively. In contrast, the death hoax post had been shared earlier, on August 11.

Image Verification 1

The image presented in the viral post, claiming to show Jackie Chan’s dead body, was analyzed by Rumor Scanner. Multiple AI-related inconsistencies were detected. Abnormalities were found in the structure of fingers, both of the alleged corpse and of others in the image, along with other facial distortions. To further confirm the suspicion, the image was tested using Hive Moderation, an AI content detection platform, which indicated with 99.9% probability that the image was AI-generated. Therefore, the photo used to support the death claim was not real.

Image Verification 2

Regarding the hospital image of Jackie Chan, keyword searches revealed that the same image was published on May 4, 2020, by a Facebook page named Jackie Chan – Armenia. The post claimed the photo was taken in September 1985, when Chan was severely injured during the filming of Armour of God in Yugoslavia. Based on this lead, a report titled That Time Jackie Chan Almost Died On The Set On One Of His Movies, published on October 26, 2017, by U.S.-based entertainment outlet Cinema Blend, was found. According to the report, during a stunt for the film, Chan was supposed to jump off a wall, grab a tree branch, and swing to the other side. While the scene was successfully completed on the first attempt, he opted for a second take, during which the branch snapped and he fell, hitting his head on a rock. The article includes actual footage from the film showing the incident.

The same account is corroborated in a report published by the international news outlet The Times.

In conclusion, the claim that action star Jackie Chan has died is entirely false.
