Recently, a video circulated online claiming that the Army Chief has lost his position due to the rape case of Tonu, and that the new Army Chief is Abdullahil Amaan Azmi, the son of Ghulam Azam.
Fact-check
The Rumor Scanner Team’s investigation revealed that the claim regarding Abdullahil Amaan Azmi, the son of former Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Professor Ghulam Azam and former Brigadier General of the Bangladesh Army, being appointed as the new Army Chief is incorrect. In reality, General Waker-uz-Zaman is still serving as the Chief of Army Staff.
Upon reviewing the video that circulated the claim, no credible evidence supporting it could be found. The video includes a segment featuring journalist, singer, and content creator Nabnita Chowdhury, where she discusses Abdullahil Amaan Azmi and Pakistani media's perspective on Bangladesh. The same video also refers to the murder of Tonu.
Further investigation into Nabnita Chowdhury’s video reveals that it was published on her YouTube channel on August 20 under the title “Is Ghulam Azam’s son becoming the Army Chief?” A comparison between this original video and the one used to promote the claim confirms that Nabnita's content was included in the disputed video.
However, Nabnita Chowdhury never claimed that Abdullahil Amaan Azmi had been appointed as the new Army Chief. Rather, she pointed to a report on the Pakistan-based news website The Catchline, which claimed that Azmi should be reinstated, promoted to a four-star general, and appointed as Army Chief. In her coverage, Nabnita questioned this narrative rather than affirming it.
In the next stage of investigation, the aforementioned report was found on The Catchline website, titled “East Pakistan Must Return: Pakistan’s Hour of Reckoning After 54 Years,” published on August 16. The report states, “In a Bangladesh freed from Indian dominance, Professor Dr. Yunus begins the process of reestablishing relations with Pakistan. On December 27, 2024, the dismissal order against Brigadier Azmi is revoked, and he is granted retirement with full benefits. However, this is not true justice. A qualified individual like Azmi should be reinstated, promoted to the rank of four-star general, and appointed as the Chief of Army Staff. If that is not possible, Dr. Yunus should appoint him as both National Security Advisor and Defense Advisor, where his strategic vision and loyalty to Pakistan would be invaluable.” (Translated)
Observation of the video's thumbnail and initial segment shows General Waker-uz-Zaman signing a document while seated beside President Mohammed Shahabuddin Chuppu. The positioning appears unnatural, and the national flag behind them bears the distorted word “Rajrupoti” instead of “Rashtrapoti” (President), a common sign of content generated or altered using AI.
The video also shows an image of Abdullahil Amaan Azmi standing beside Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, wearing a flower garland. Closer examination reveals abnormalities in Yunus’s skin tone and posture, along with distorted letters on Azmi’s chest—characteristics often seen in AI-generated or manipulated visuals. Reverse image searches of these photos yielded no results from credible media outlets or trustworthy sources, confirming that the thumbnail and opening visuals were AI-generated.
Keyword searches related to the claim did not yield any credible evidence or media reports confirming either the resignation of General Waker-uz-Zaman or the appointment of Abdullahil Amaan Azmi as Army Chief. Such a significant development would have been covered by mainstream news sources had it been true.
Moreover, the claim in question was first circulated on August 22. On the day prior, August 21, a post from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Facebook page announced that the Chief of Army Staff, General Waker-uz-Zaman, SBP, OSP, SGP, PSC, departed for China on an official visit. During his stay, he was scheduled to meet with senior Chinese military and civilian officials to discuss bilateral military cooperation. He is expected to return to Bangladesh on August 27, 2025.
Therefore, the claim that former Brigadier General Abdullahil Amaan Azmi has been appointed as the new Army Chief is false.
